Counseling, online and phone support for mental illness

If you are in an emergency call your local emergency number for emergency services. You can access many free mental health helplines, support websites, online counseling, web forums, interactive toolkits, one-on-one counseling and group therapy sessions.

Sometimes it can be hard to know who to talk to when you are going through a mental health crisis. If you do not have family or friends nearby, or a strong local support network, it can be hard to get through difficult times on your own. Whether you are in a crisis or simply feeling low and need to talk, it helps to know that support is available at any hour of the day or night.

In many countries there are free mental health phone lines and online support services that offer crisis support, information, counselling and therapy to people of all ages.

In an emergency#

If you, or someone close to you, is in immediate danger or has seriously harmed themselves, call your local emergency number (for example 911 in the US and Canada, 112 across the EU and many countries, 999 in the UK, or 000 in Australia) for emergency services.

If you are not in an emergency but need help right away, look for a crisis support or suicide prevention helpline in your area. Many of these are free, confidential and available around the clock, for people who are having suicidal thoughts, for those affected by another person’s suicide, and for healthcare workers supporting people at risk.

Talking to someone who understands#

Talking to someone who understands your situation is usually the best place to start. Whether you are dealing with depression, anxiety, grief or a relationship breakdown, there are many specialised helplines and online resources to help you through difficult times. Some services focus on particular conditions, such as anxiety disorders, and can provide support, information and referral for you, your family and your carers.

There are also dedicated lines for related concerns, such as confidential alcohol and drug counselling and referral, advice about poisonings and medicine overdoses, and support from experienced family-violence counsellors.

Help for children and teenagers#

It is not unusual for children or teenagers to experience periods of depression and anxiety, while others may struggle with bullying, peer pressure, or drugs and alcohol. If your child needs to speak to someone for advice and information, there are services and counsellors available. These conversations are private and confidential, so young people can be open and honest.

Some services are designed specifically for young people, offering information and support online or through a local centre. As children grow and move through different stages of life, it can be hard to tell what is a mental health problem and what is just a normal part of development. If you are worried that your child may be struggling, talk to a healthcare professional. Your local doctor can discuss your situation and point you toward further support, and there are also helplines, websites and specialist clinics for children and young people.

Help for parents#

If you are a parent or carer of a child, there are telephone counselling services that can offer advice and support, including lines for parents of children and young people, and services for families with young children. You can also speak to experts in child psychology for guidance on issues affecting your child.

Help for veterans and defence personnel#

Because of the nature of military work and the extra pressure it can place on families, some issues are more common among veterans, serving personnel and their families. Dedicated, around-the-clock telephone and online counselling and support services are available for current and former members and their families.

Support for carers and family members#

Looking after a family member with a mental health issue can be stressful, tiring and isolating, so it is important to ask for help. By looking after yourself and getting support, you will be better able to cope. Many helplines and online resources offer tips on caring for yourself as well as the person you are responsible for, and there are specific resources for children of parents with a mental illness.

Seeing a counsellor#

Seeing a counsellor, psychologist or psychotherapist can be a positive way of dealing with times of stress or sadness. A counsellor can help you clarify your concerns and develop new habits and coping strategies. Anyone struggling with a mental health issue or a life concern can seek counselling, common reasons include depression, relationship breakdown, grief and anxiety.

If you think you would benefit from talking to a professional:

  • ask your doctor for a recommendation or referral to a psychologist or psychiatrist
  • contact your local community health centre
  • use a reputable professional directory to find a registered psychologist, psychotherapist or counsellor in your area

Depending on where you live and your circumstances, some counselling costs may be partly covered by public health programmes or private health insurance if you are referred by your doctor. Contact your health fund or local health service to find out what support you may be entitled to.
